Let’s delve into the world of skin prep—a step that sets the stage for any makeup application. But should use 4 products to complete a makeup application? This process is often obscured by a deluge of products pushed by influencers eager to make a sale and keep things interesting and new. The drips, the creams, the sprays—they look really cool on the latest Instagram reel in your feed, but trust me when I say, simplicity is where it’s at when prepping your skin for makeup.
First things first, forget the idea that you need a long shopping list of primers, serums, and creams to create a flawless canvas. In reality, all you need are one or two simple products tailored to your skin type to get your skin ready for makeup: moisturizer, beauty oil and illuminator.
For those with combo to oily skin, a lightweight moisturizer combined is the perfect duo. This combo hydrates the skin without adding excess oiliness while providing a subtle glow that shines through your makeup.
On the other hand, if you have normal to dry skin, a nourishing beauty oil paired with an illuminator is your go-to prep step. This combination adds a boost of hydration and radiance to the skin, ensuring your makeup glides on smoothly and stays put throughout the day.
But why skip primers, you ask? Well, let’s break it down. Primers are often packed with silicones and other pore-clogging ingredients that can suffocate the skin and lead to breakouts. While they may temporarily smooth out the skin’s texture, they can also create a slippery surface that causes makeup to slide around, especially in humid conditions. If you have oily skin, these primers are a huge no, no.
As a makeup artist committed to both beauty and skin health, I refuse to compromise one for the other. That’s why I advocate for a minimalistic approach to skin prep that prioritizes the skin’s natural balance and longevity of your makeup.
So the next time you’re prepping your skin for makeup, remember: keep it simple, keep it effective, and let your natural beauty shine through. Put your blinders on when it comes to the influencer hype and hello to a simple and long-lasting makeup look that’s all about you.
