It took me 44 years to figure out how to make getting dressed easier for myself and my aha moment came from watching MEN. I can see the comments now. π
There have been a lot of important men in my life and at some point I started noticing the way they get dressed. They don’t reinvent themselves every morning. Most of them have maybe 3β4 silhouettes they know they feel good in and they just repeat them.
Work. Dinner. Vacation. An event. Everyday life. Same basic formulas, just adapted for the occasion.
Meanwhile, I could stand in a closet FULL of clothes and somehow still feel like I had nothing to wear.
Once I figured out my own few silhouettes, getting dressed became so much easier. Shopping got easier too because suddenly I knew what I was looking for. I wasn’t buying some random shirt because it looked cute on a mannequin only to bring it home and realize I had absolutely no idea what to do with it. I started buying things that actually fit into the way I dress and, funny enough, I started enjoying my clothes more.
Now don’t get me wrong, if shopping is your hobby and you loooove spending hours trying things on and putting outfits together, GO FOR IT. This isn’t for you. π I’m talking to the women who don’t enjoy it and are tired of using so much brain power trying to figure this stuff out.
Because the decision fatigue is REAL.
And once I started thinking about it, I realized we overcomplicate so many things we have to do every single day. Getting dressed. Shopping. Makeup. Choosing colors. Getting ready.
We think we need more choices when sometimes what we really need is to understand what already works for us.
I had this whole aha moment about my closet and then realized I’ve basically been teaching women the same idea with makeup for years.
You don’t need 15 completely different makeup looks for every possible occasion. You don’t need an everyday face, a work face, a vacation face, a date-night face, a wedding-guest face and whatever other face we’ve decided we need. π
You need to understand what works for YOU.
That’s what I want my clients to learn. We create an everyday routine that makes sense for your face, your lifestyle and the amount of effort you actually want to put into getting ready. Then you learn how to adapt what you already know for different parts of your life.
Going to dinner? We can change a few things. Going on vacation? You already know what works and what you actually need to pack. Need to show up on camera for your business? We can adapt it. Going to a wedding? You don’t suddenly need to become a completely different person.
Same woman. Same foundation of knowledge. We just adjust it.
And once you understand that foundation, shopping starts to change too.
This is a big reason I teach makeup the way I do.
There are SO many rules around beauty. What you’re supposed to wear at a certain age, what colors supposedly work for you, what you need to buy, what you shouldn’t wear, what’s trending now and what apparently became unacceptable while we weren’t looking. π The online beauty space can be…well, confusing. You see someone doing things the way they like to do them, and then somehow that turns into telling you why everything YOU’RE doing is wrong. Annnnd, by the way, here’s a product that will fix it all. Hello, marketing by creating a pain point for you! π
And I’m not saying there aren’t great products, techniques or things worth learning. Of course there are. I just don’t think you need to be made to feel like you’re doing everything wrong first.
No wonder women are overwhelmed.
I don’t want to give you another giant list of rules to remember. I want you to understand what you’re looking at so choosing starts to feel easier and more intuitive. I want you to be able to shop for makeup without standing there completely overwhelmed by 400 lipsticks. I want you to be able to see a color you love and feel curious about it instead of immediately wondering whether you’re “allowed” to wear it.
I want you to know which products in your makeup bag actually have a purpose and how to use them.
Most importantly, I want you to be able to get ready without thinking about makeup nearly as much as you do right now.
Which sounds funny coming from a makeup artist, but that’s really the goal.
The Beauty Reset isn’t about turning you into someone who suddenly wants to spend an hour doing her makeup every morning or convincing you that you need a bunch of new products.
Quite the opposite.
We start with YOU. What you already own, what you actually like, what’s frustrating you, how much makeup you realistically want to wear and what you need your routine to do for your real life.
Then I teach you my method and we build your personalized everyday routine together. You go home, live with it and practice it in your actual bathroom without me standing there beside you.
And then you come back.
This time, you’re doing the makeup while I’m there to teach, coach, troubleshoot and refine the things that didn’t quite click the first time.
Because watching me do something and being able to do it yourself are two very different things.
I don’t want you leaving my studio thinking, “Well, Heather made me look great.”
I want you leaving knowing, “I know how to do this.”
And maybe that’s what took me 44 years to understand about my closet too. The answer wasn’t more clothes. It was finally understanding what worked for me. Once I did, I could stop thinking about getting dressed so much and just…get dressed. That’s what I want beauty to feel like too.
Make it easier. Trust yourself. Get ready and go live your life.
